About Mayacamas Vineyards

High above the Napa Valley floor, tucked into the rugged slopes of Mount Veeder, Mayacamas has been quietly defining California Cabernet and Chardonnay for over 125 years. Founded in 1889 and revived in the 1950s by the legendary Travers family, Mayacamas remains one of the most iconic and enduring producers in Napa — a winery where old-school integrity meets mountain-grown elegance.

These are wines of restraint and longevity. Fermented in concrete vats, aged in large neutral oak casks, and never over-extracted or over-oaked, Mayacamas wines are built to evolve — sometimes for decades — and always to speak of their place.

“We don’t chase trends. We honor tradition — and the mountain does the rest.”

The Mayacamas Philosophy

At Mayacamas, the philosophy is refreshingly simple: let the mountain speak. With vineyards perched at elevations between 1,800 and 2,400 feet, the team farms organically on steep volcanic slopes that yield fruit with vibrant acidity, firm structure, and intense aromatic complexity.

Each wine is a study in balance — minimal intervention in the cellar, no flashy winemaking tricks, just honest fruit handled with patience and purpose. The result? Wines that offer purity over polish, depth without weight, and a sense of place that’s impossible to replicate.

Mayacamas remains one of the few estates in Napa producing wines in the classic style — wines that demand time, invite thought, and reward the patient drinker.

The Terroir

Mount Veeder’s high elevation and cooler climate create a dramatic growing environment unlike any other in Napa. Rocky volcanic soils, extended hang times, and daily shifts between sun and fog allow for slow, even ripening. The wines that result are firm, fresh, and quietly powerful — a far cry from the plush, fruit-driven Cabernets that dominate the valley floor.

This is mountain winemaking in its purest form: untamed, elegant, and built to last.
